With the 30th anniversary of his third Master victory, and his recordsetting 51st appearance in the Tournament, it was fitting that Gary Player would serve as an inspiration for countryman and 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman.

Player’s Saturday night phone message said that he believed in the 28-years-old golfer and that he needed to believe in himself. On Sunday, that’s just what Immelman did.

Immelman led, or shared the lead in all four rounds, becoming the first player since Seve Ballesteros in 1980 to accomplish that feat. His 8-under-par 280 total earned him a three-stroke victory over Tiger Woods und four over Stewart Cink an Brandt Snedeker.

The 2008 Masters also featured the Par 3 Contest on television for the first time, a new Junior Patron Programme and sveral more initiatives to grow the game of golf.
